🌲 Trophy Dark and Luck Mitigation
Skeleton Code Machine recently had an article about the “doomed and desperate treasure-hunters” of Trophy Dark.
The game uses an interesting dice mechanism based on Cthulhu Dark. Players roll dice when attempting actions, gaining more dice if they have relevant skills, accept a Devil’s Bargain, or risk their body/mind. Failures can be re-rolled… but at a cost.
It’s a fascinating system, and a great example of how “luck mitigation” can be built into games in a meaningful and thematic way.

📝 Make Your Own One-Page Roleplaying Game
The new Make Your Own One-Page Roleplaying Game book has been a huge success, far exceeding my expectations. Hearing from new creators who were inspired by the book has been the best. If you have reached out, sincerely thank you!
Here is what what one reviewer said:
It's incredible what wealth of information fits into 52 pages. The nods to other resources, may it be essays or assets, are very much appreciated - this is a great starting point to making your own game, one-page or not, although the focus certainly helps in creating something accomplishable. I loved the approach of using the "Start With This" exercises, they get your gears turning even if you decide to only work on a couple of them. Honestly, what a great guide!
If you’d like to get a print copy of the book, pre-orders are open now!
The production schedule is the same as Caveat Emptor, and test prints were sent to the printer at the same time. Both are complete, and just waiting for confirmation that the tests look perfect.
Pre-orders will be open until Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

⚓ d6 Unusual Street Encounters
Previously we had d6 Things Dredged Out of Narragansett Bay, and a similar theme this time.
It’s 1851 in Providence, Rhode Island.
You are walking home from the pub when:
Ezekiel O. (Occult Peddler): Ragged clothes and pushing a cart of trinkets, bottles, cheap jewelry, and homemade remedies. He yells to get your attention. Just returned from the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in London, he says, having discovered the most powerful elixirs. Offers a free sample, and aggressively won’t accept your refusal.
Henry Thornshift, Esq. (Conspirator): Turning a corner into an alley you bump into a group of well-dressed men discussing something in hushed voices. They notice you, quickly hand off some documents, and disperse. Mr. Thornshift, a prominent lawyer in the city, covers his face as he hurries off.
Ophelia T. (Street Performer): You hear the music well before you see her. Filthy clothes and long, tangled hair can’t hide her beauty, but that isn’t what captivates you. A simple song on a cheap violin, but you can’t stop. It pulls you in until you lose sight of the world around you…
Nathaniel H. (Frantic Child): The child, no more than nine, runs up to you and tugs your hand. Puffy eyes and red cheeks show he’s been crying. He pleads, “They are taking my dad. They had hoods. His books. Please!” Yanking at your arm to come with him, it’s hard to understand much else.
Otis H. and Anton J. (Arguing Sailors): You’re no stranger to foul language, but these insults are shocking. The two old men look like caricatures of sailors, as if they just stepped out of a play. One even has a wooden leg. They are arguing over a box. Rust and mud cover it now, but it was clearly ornate at one point. They tug and pull at the box as you approach, oblivious to your presence.
Agatha W. (Relic Hunter): You hear the sounds of a struggle. You run to assist, but before you reach them, the woman strikes out with some sort of wooden stake. Her attacker crumples and drops to the ground dead. She looks at you briefly, then runs off before you can speak. The man’s corpse has already begun to liquify…
Another writing exercise based on d8 Best Practices for Random Tables. As with the last ones, if you find any of these prompts useful or can work them into your TTRPG sessions, let me know!

✏️ One-Page RPG Jam
There are still 11 days left to submit a game to this year’s One-Page RPG Jam. The jam is hosted by Unknown Dungeon and is one of my favorite events each year.
There are currently 291 submissions, and I’m sure many more will be entered before the deadline. Here are some notable ones:
Caveat Emptor: You are an Assistant Demon running a curiosity shop, selling cursed items to unsuspecting humans. Pay $5 or more to get the Expanded Edition PDF.
A Perfect Rock: A sci-fi worldbuilding game from Deep Dark Games. Zero-prep roleplaying for 1-4 players. Uses actual rocks for your search for a new homeworld!
Charon’s Obols: A narrative RPG based on the PUSH SRD mechanisms by Gomez Writes Games. Players navigate the underworld of Greek mythology attempting to reach Elysium.
Auctōrātus: A 1-2 player game of big stompy mechs vs. monsters by M. Allen Hall. The fun of BattleTech compressed into a single page with almost zero-setup and fast action.

🎲 Recently played: Magic: The Gathering
Thirty-one years after it was created, I have finally dipped my toe into the Magic: The Gathering waters. Not counting a brief try of Portal, this is my first time playing.
I fully admit that it was the Bloomburrow art and theme that got me to try it. Cute animals doing things is hard to resist (see also: Everdell). So I bought the Bloomburrow Starter Kit with two decks, and have had a really good time just playing casual games with friends!
Surely I won’t be buying any more cards…

I REALLY want your "Make Your Own One-Page Roleplaying Game", but you're not shipping to Mexico. Will this change in the future? Will you have a PDF version?
