Behold, MÖRKTOBER is here!

Make something each day in October for the MÖRK BORG roleplaying game inspired by the prompt list and share it — an item, scroll, weapon, class, dungeon room, art, or anything else!¹ Tag it #MÖRKTOBER on social media and/or share it on Discord!

Here’s how to participate in MÖRKTOBER:

• There is no registration or formal process: Make things when you feel like it, and don’t worry about missing some days. It’s a creative writing (or art) exercise, so use it the way you feel is best for you.

• Use the daily prompts: There is a prompt (i.e. word) for each day in October to spark your creativity and give you a theme. Use it to make whatever you want — items, NPCs, settings, art, music, writing, whatever. Share it (or don’t) on social media, itch.io, or on the MÖRK BORG Discord Server.

• It’s OK to not post every day: Take breaks when you need them. Skip days if that helps. Some people just post a few times a week if that works better for their work/life schedule. We all have enough deadlines and stress in our lives already. No need to add more!

Last year had an amazing number of people participating and generating dark, weird, and wonderful things all month! For example, Johan Nohr turned his creations into a book called A Cruel Month. I can’t wait to see what you make this year!

DOOM QUEST

New this year is DOOM QUEST, an optional puzzle hunt for MÖRKTOBER!

Puzzle hunts are events where participants attempt to solve a series of interconnected puzzles, each leading to the next clue or location. The puzzles usually involve logic, wordplay, and creative problem solving.²

Your goal in Doom Quest is to find the Five Words of Doom.

Solve the puzzles and discover the words to win prizes including:³

• Ikhon: A mystery box for MÖRK BORG. A gaol keeping four almost-forgotten folk gods at bay; the Bilkherd, the Becklure, the Old Dead and the dreaded Silkfiend. This could very well be a curse.

• Foul: A MÖRK BORG funnel adventure bundle by M. Allen Hall.

• Trapped Within: A MÖRK BORG zine by Philip Jensen.

• Blackflower: A CY_BORG heist by Exeunt Press.

Here’s how to participate DOOM QUEST:

• No explicit instructions: DOOM QUEST has no direct instructions for how to solve it, but instead requires solvers to deduce the approach to solving it. Figuring out where to submit your final answers is part of the puzzle.

• Start with An Offering of Sweet Honey: The words can be discovered by carefully reading Doom Quest: An Offering of Sweet Honey (available for free) and also using the weekly clues. It includes an FAQ with helpful information.

• You can’t solve it all right away: Each week a new clue will be posted to the An Offering of Sweet Honey download page.⁴ Without each week’s clue, you won’t be able to solve that week’s puzzle. Links to check your answers for the first four Words of Doom will be available. No public spoilers please!

I’ve always wanted to run an online puzzle hunt, and I couldn’t be more excited to launch DOOM QUEST this year! The puzzles were really fun to design, and seeing the different ways the playtesters approached them has been fascinating.

2. The MIT Mystery Hunt is probably the most famous example of a puzzle hunt. Puzzled Pint is another puzzle hunt event, held monthly in cities around the world. Both were key inspirations for DOOM QUEST and are good examples to check out.

3. Solve the final meta puzzle and submit all five Words of Doom. Winners will be randomly selected from everyone who submitted correct answers. Must be 18 years or older to be eligible to receive a prize. Please note that all prizes will be Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU). VAT is not included. This means that additional taxes, VAT, import fees, or other charges may apply upon delivery which are the responsibility of the winner. Void where prohibited. No purchase necessary.

4. The Week 1 clue will be posted on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Subsequent clues will be posted each week on October 8, October 15, and so on.
