The next monthly update about Epsilon — a solo adventure game about exploring a dark and corrupting forest. Creating characters with different backgrounds.
Before reading this, I was going to say Ace is a good alternative to Talent (and it also invokes Savage Worlds, a ❤️ system of mine atm); but, Failsafe really hits the mark of a one-off-in-a-moment-of-need word that is humanizing (like talent). Contingency sounds like a one-off-in-a-moment-of-need beaurocratic word and like something provided at a cost or as a burden and as a person who has worked for beaurocratic systems, doesn't work consistently or fits the job.
As an alternative title for "Talent" (I enjoy reading your footnotes). I was just thinking that it seems like what you describe in Talent is a one-off, oh-god-oh-god-I'm-gonna-die-to-a-plant sort of ability and if Talent didn't capture the rules bending nature of the ability, perhaps Failsafe or Contingency might work?
“Or if I wanted to keep the blurb I wrote for it, … an ace?” As in “ace in the hole”? Suggesting also “hole card” and “joker”? Special talents are mechanically all the same and universally applicable?
The talent/ace can be used once per game, but the equipment can be spammed “if you think it would help”? Perhaps — and it is a weak, tentative perhaps — there is also a case for equipment giving a bonus once per game. (The fiction doesn’t have to be that the equipment is expended: you can still narrate/journal its use, but it won’t give a second bonus.) Do you want to say more about the difference between talents and equipment and the thinking behind it?
I know: too many questions; I must be patient.
“Why’d they pick you for this incursion into the EZ?” Play to find out. ;)
Love the glitched photos!
Thanks! ☺️
I just wanna play! *excited puppy feet*
Thank you!
I'm working as fast as I can. It's a lot of work to get it all (basically) done before the Kickstarter launches. 😅
I know! Cheering you on and being excited, not demanding haste. I will wait for a good thing to be complete!
What about a Failsafe or a Contingency?

Ace, failsafe, contingency, and talent are all good terms. As you pointed out, each one has a slightly different feeling to it!
What are those?

(I guess it would help if I provide context for what I'm commenting on...) :)
Ohhh!! 😁
I didn’t catch that at first! Those are interesting options. I like it! Thanks!!
